The Fellini film “Roma” is like a layered portrait of Rome, Rome being the principle protagonist in the film. The movie contains references to all the eras of the city starting with the famous myth of Romulus and Remus, relating to the founding of Rome in which the abandoned twins were suckled by a she wolf on the banks of The Tiberius. Romulus eventually kills Remus and founds the city of Rome upon Palatine hill.
Roma #1 has been constructed from the architectural drawing by Letarouilly of The Scale Regia, the grand entrance to the Vatican through which the Popes and cardinals would enter in procession. A prominent feature of this entrance is the equestrian statue of Constantine the great and the references to the Vision of The Cross which was said to have appeared before him before the battle of Milvian Bridge the outcome of which led to the Roman Empire turning toward Christianity. The architectural form of the drawing has been cut through enlarged stills of the procession of the cardinals from Fellini’s film Roma. The interior architecture in the rear of the image is from ruined House of the Grand Portal in Herculaneum.
