The “Stalker” is the “guide” the shaman for the professor and the writer as they navigate the Zone in the Tarkovsky film “Stalker”. His role is to steer the two rational beings from the everyday world through a supernatural landscape of uncertain territories and unknown dangers . The stalker is in frequent communion with forces in nature beyond that of the typical human domain. The Tarkovsky films are often permeated by water, dripping, rippling and flowing a seemingly ever pervasive presence. In this work a portrait of the Stalker taken from film has been cut through with the reflections of a circular ripple in a stream. Below this is a rearranged image from the film in which an abandoned picture of Van Eyck’s St John lies discarded amongst other debris from the ruins of soviet civilization in a pool of water.
