The imagery in the drawing contains references to the bloody sports of the Roman circus with the image of the two horsed Chariot also included is the famous Discobolus from Hadrian’s villa. Through the window can be seen St Peters Basilica, the interior layer in the sculpture contains a section of the facade of St Peters.
The rear layer of the work contains imagery from the Villa Murecine in Pompeii, prominently featured is the winged victory figure referencing the hellenic goddess of Victory from Samothrace and seen as a protective element as much as an offering to the gods of victory.
