“A science fiction movie about the past” Fellini Satyricon is a film by Fellini based upon a book by Polonius written during the reign of Nero in the first century AD. Fellini’s film, inspired in part by the paintings of Brueghal equates the decadence of ancient history with contemporary Rome. The dreamlike surrealist film provides a sense of connection with both past and present, the masks of the characters relating to the former history and are seen as interchangeable with the present, at the end we are just left with the characters as existing as frescoes on a crumbling wall.
