The surface layer of this work has been cut from the 1375 Catalan Atlas depicting the Mansa of Mali. The Mansa of Mali has been estimated to have been the richest man in the history of the world and ruled the Malian empire from 1312 to 1337. Below this layer the map of Bamako has ben cut through multiple record covers from some of Mali’s leading musicians such as Ali Farka Toure, Amadou and Mariam, Salif Keita and others.
The river that runs through the city, The Niger, has been created from some of the fabrics available in the markets of Bamako.
