Seattle has a very rich Musical and literary history, something that much of the populace would have intersected with at various times in their lives.
This sculpture is a layered sculpture of Seattle and the surrounding water, including every street on the top surface layer. The geographic reach extends down below Sea tac airport and all the way up to above Shoreline in the North. The work contains elements of Seattle’s music history, documentary work, film and narrative relating to the “Battle of Seattle in 1999” Novels particularly relating to Seattle such as the well known “Snow Falling on Cedars” with it’s investigation of the traumas of the Japanese population during WW2 in Seattle. “Truth Like Sun” by Jim Lynch looking at the politics of the World Fair. The under layer visible in parts is the graphic novel by Charles Burns “Black Hole” and also excerpts from the Hate comics by Peter Bagge,
Underneath this layer and visible through holes cut where the City parks are located is a density of material from historic sources, imagery that relates to the Seattle fire of 1889, the old Japantown pre WW2 and other historic imagery from earlier in the 20th century.
