South Rose Window, Chartres Cathedral

Angels and Horns

The south Rose window of Chartres Cathedral, a masterpiece of high gothic art, depicts the apocalypse with Christ at the center. It has survived intact through the bloody wars of religion, the French Revolution, nineteenth century fires and the Second World War. The image of this window is re imagined to depict a landscape alluding to the seven trumpets being given to the angels. The form of the window has been cut through and combined with multiple angels from Durer’s woodcarvings of the Book of St John, the book of revelations in the last chapter of The New Testament.
